Center of Excellence in Group Psychotherapy Services (CoE)
The Center of Excellence in Group Psychotherapy Services (CoE) is the first international designation to recognize organizations that offer high quality, evidence-based group therapy services. The Center designation was developed by the International Board for Certification of Group Psychotherapists, the certification arm of the American Group Psychotherapy Association. Since its inception in 1993, the IBCGP's mission is to promote group therapy standards and training. The CoE designation targets a greater audience for ensuring these standards are met. The purpose is to recognize organizations that achieve and demonstrate excellence in group therapy practice. It also provides a competitive advantage to mental health organizations by showcasing their group expertise.
The CoE designation provides consumers with a benchmark to determine the quality of care that they can expect to receive. The designation is based on quality indicators articulated in standards established for group certification of clinicians (CGP) and best practice descriptions in the Practice Guidelines for Group Psychotherapy (2007 AGPA Science to Service Task Force). This designation indicates that the professional environment where group treatment is offered is guided by a leadership body that advocates and supports excellence in group therapy practice. As a natural outcome of this, the CoE elevates the reputation and standards of the group therapy organization/practice, as well as the field. Organizations are recognized based on the results of four (4) performance indicators each linked to established practice guidelines for group therapy.
- Ongoing continuing education and training in group psychotherapy is available to assure a high level of commitment to continued excellence in providing group psychotherapy services.
- Staff are supported in meeting the established nationally accepted standards of education, training and experience in group psychotherapy (CGP).
- Practicing group psychotherapists in the organization are certified in group or are receiving supervision or consultation by a CGP professional.
- Group therapy services provided are supported by evidence-based practices.
