The Future of Group Therapy in Psychiatry Residency (Breakfast Meeting)

Chair:

George Saiger, M.D., CGP, FAGPA, Faculty, Group Psychotherapy Training Program, Washington School of Psychiatry, Washington, DC

Training in psychotherapies of all stripes for psychiatrists has undergone many vicissitudes in recent years.  The "Decade of the Brain" shifted the training emphasis so far toward the biological that we are only now recovering.  But what are the future prospects for producing psychiatrists adept across the Meyerian biopsychosocial continuum?  Group therapy has an important place in this process.

Learning Objectives:

The attendee will be able to:

1. Identify the role of group therapy in psychiatric education

2. Appreciate the challenges in providing group psychotherapy training in the context of psychiatric residency

3. Understand the models for such training currently available.
