Workshop 68

Peri-Terror Backlash Mitigation: Working with Racially Targeted Communities

Presented under the auspices of the AGPA Diversity SIG

Chair:

Siddharth Ashvin Shah, M.D., MPH, Psychosocial Assistance Without Borders, Washington, DC

"Peri-terror" means the emotional climate before, during, after, acts of terrorism (and perceived terrorism).  This workshop will orient participants to working with ethnic communities at risk for targeted bigotry (Backlash).  Without specially-focused approaches to mitigate the additional layer of trauma they suffer, backlash-affected communities become further isolated and alienated.

demonstration, experiential, didactic, sharing of work experiences

Learning Objectives:

The attendee will be able to:
1. Identify barriers to working with populations vulnerable to Backlash.
2. Recommend proactive approaches to work with Muslim and perceived Muslim populations.
3. Explore resistances to working with populations victimized by their racial difference.
