Playing with Imagery: Novice Therapists’ Use of Countertransference within Interpersonal Group Psychotherapy

The focus of the presentation will be the creative use of imagery and countertransference by novice co-therapists with difficult clients within an interpersonal psychotherapy group. Discussion will center on the experiences of co-therapist doctoral graduate students in utilizing countertransference reactions to guide and shape the group over a three-month treatment.

The attendee will be able to:

1. Identify the potential uses of imagery and countertransference in group psychotherapy.

2. Relate countertransference use to formulation with difficult group therapy clients.

3. Conceptualize the use of shared countertransference reactions of co-therapists.
