Serious Mental Illness in Agencies: Dealing with Acute Symptoms As They Emerge in the Group Setting

Symptoms of serious mental illness appear in groups at unexpected times and in challenging ways. Our goal is to increase the early recognition, understanding and management of these events and to explore and identify effective interventions.  The presenters, who have 75 years of combined experience, will facilitate the sharing of work experiences, discussions and consultations.

Learning Objectives:

The attendee will be able to:

1. Appraise the influence of group setting and process on the presentation of symptoms

2. Demonstrate interventions intended to facilitate the early detection and management of serious symptoms in the group setting and methods to facilitate the alleviation, management or containment of these symptoms.

3. Appraise the effectiveness of working with recipients with serious and persistent Mental Illness in the group setting.

4. Demonstrate the value of consultation after the sudden onset of serious symptoms in the group setting
