At the heart of the Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health and AGPA is the desire to enhance the number and the quality of effectively

led therapeutic groups in the public and private sectors internationally. To accomplish this we reach out to students, new professionals and

mental health professionals working in public settings and offer them scholarships to assist them in attending the annual AGPA Training Conference

where they receive exposure to safe and stimulating group experiences and an opportunity to learn from the most experienced and talented group therapists.

Scholarships

The Anne Alonso Scholarship

The Anne Alonso Scholarship, established in 2002 in honor of Anne Alonso, PhD, CGP, DFAGPA, a distinguished teacher, trainer, practitioner and prominent theoretician will recognize demonstrated excellence in psychodynamic group psychotherapy. The award is for up to the full six-day tuition to the Annual Institute and Conference and includes a travel stipend.

The Barry Bukatman, M.D. Memorial AGPA Scholarship

The Barry Bukatman, M.D. Memorial AGPA Scholarship, sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Group Psychotherapy Society honors the memory of Barry Bukatman, M.D. who was President-Elect of the society at the time of his death in 2002. Preference will be given to a MAGPS member who is enrolled full time in an accredited training program or is a new professional in the first three years since graduation.

The Donald T. Brown GLBT Memorial Scholarship

The Donald T. Brown GLBT Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to helping clinicians-in-training participate in AGPA and Affiliate Society activities by attending the AGPA Annual Institute and Conference. Before his death of AIDS in 1988, Donald Brown participated with dedication and exuberance in the national and local governance of the AGPA. He was especially interested in the teaching and supervision of group psychotherapists. This scholarship is intended to encourage group therapists identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual and/or transgender, or whose work is predominantly with these communities to attend the Annual Meeting.

The Josephine M. Cunningham-Tervalon Scholarship

The Josephine M. Cunningham-Tervalon Scholarship was established in 1999 in honor of Josephine M. Cunningham-Tervalon, MSW, CGP, FAGPA, a role model, mentor, teacher, supervisor, and leader, who has inspired the development of many colleagues, particularly women in the practice of group psychotherapy. This scholarship was established to evoke and encourage women of color to further their professional development and training. The award is for up to the full six-day tuition to the AGPA Annual Institute and Conference.

The Durkin-Glatzer Scholarships

The Durkin-Glatzer Scholarships were established in 1985 to commemorate the pioneering work of Helen Durkin, PhD, DFAGPA, and Henriette Glatzer, PhD, DFAGPA, outstanding thinkers, teachers, and clinicians whose efforts set a standard of excellence in the field of group psychotherapy. These scholarships encourage women entering or re-entering the field of group psychotherapy who show promise of making substantial contributions to the field to become actively involved in AGPA early in their careers. The annual scholarships include up to the six-day tuition for the AGPA Annual Institute and Conference and a stipend to help defray the cost of travel.

The Howard and Barbara Goldstein Scholarship

This scholarship has been established in the name of Howard and Barbara Goldstein, who have had a long-standing dedication to the growth and development of children. It is to be awarded to an individual demonstrating deep interest in work with children and/or adolescents. The recipient is to be chosen from among those therapists who wish to improve their ability to empower children beyond what might have been thought possible, due to their difficult, earlier childhood experiences. The annual scholarship includes up to the six-day tuition for the AGPA Annual Institute and Conference and a stipend to help defray the cost of travel.

The Ruth Hochberg Scholarship

The Ruth Hochberg Scholarship is presented to a single parent, woman clinician to further her group psychotherapy education and training to enable her to attend AGPA's Annual Meeting. The Scholarship was established in honor of Ruth Hochberg, PhD, CGP, DFAGPA, a long-time contributor to group psychotherapy, AGPA and the Group Foundation, and long-time supporter of women's issues. The award covers up to the full six-day tuition to the AGPA Annual Meeting.

The International Scholarship

The International Scholarship is awarded to group therapists from economically disadvantaged countries, allowing highly qualified candidates to participate in the AGPA Annual Institute and Conference. Up to the six-day tuition and travel funds are provided.

The Susanne Jensen Scholarship

The Susanne Jensen Scholarship is awarded to support a foreign born woman who now works or trains in the United States as a group psychotherapist.

The Saul Scheidlinger Scholarships

The Saul Scheidlinger Scholarships were established in 1999 to celebrate more than 60 years of dedication to groups and group psychotherapy and the leadership and devotion to AGPA by Saul Scheidlinger, PhD, CGP, DFAGPA. Annually, up to six-day tuition scholarships and travel stipends to attend the AGPA Annual Meeting are presented to students who are training in child and adolescent group psychotherapy.

The Mary M. Tanenbaum Scholarship Fund

The Mary M. Tanenbaum Scholarship Fund supports an individual who has made a mid-life career change to become a mental health clinician. The annual scholarship includes up to the six-day tuition for the AGPA Annual Institute and Conference and a stipend to help defray the cost of travel.

The Wilkenfeld Psychiatric Resident Scholarships

The Wilkenfeld Psychiatric Resident Scholarships provide full tuition and travel stipends for two psychiatric residents to attend the Annual Meeting. Applicants from the Medical University of South Carolina at Charleston and the University of Texas Medical School-Houston will be given priority.

Donated Scholarships

Those who are not eligible for or are not awarded endowed scholarships are automatically considered for tuition only scholarships supported by individual donations and grants to the Group Psychotherapy Foundation.

How To Apply:

A. Early Decision Scholarship Application Deadline: November 1. Due to Hurricane Sandy, the submission date in 2012 has been extended until November 30th.

1. Applications postmarked by the deadline will receive priority

consideration.

2. Applications postmarked after the deadline will be considered and will

be awarded scholarships on a funds available basis.

3. Applications may be submitted electronically (which is preferable) with materials (application and supporting)

in word and/or PDF format.

B. The Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health Scholarship Committee must be in receipt of the following

application items before being considered for a scholarship:

1. Completed Scholarship Applicant Profile.

3. Letter of introduction identifying your:

-Interest in and/or reasons for attending the Annual Meeting

-Present and future goals with particular focus to your plans in the

area of group therapy.

-Personal statement of financial need for a scholarship,

4. Two personal letters of recommendation, from someone

knowledgeable of your experience supporting your attendance at the

Annual Meeting, preferably from an AGPA member, Affiliate Society

member or a colleague or faculty member.

5. A completed Annual Meeting Registration Form with your event
